    Biography

    Michaela Mangum is a Masters student in the Disaster Science and Management Program. A proud Mountaineer, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. After graduating, she served a term with the FEMA Corps, a ten-month service program dedicated to supporting FEMA personnel in national disaster response and recovery missions. During the program, she served on multiple deployments including working as a GIS specialist in the field office in Jacksonville, North Carolina following Hurricane Florence, assisting disaster survivors in Panama City, Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, and supporting the efforts of the JFO in Sacramento, California during the Camp Fire disaster. This semester she will be helping contribute to the center’s DRCit! project which is dedicated to making disaster research more accessible to practitioners and the public. Her hobbies include hiking, photography, and travel, and she’s an avid lover of The Lumineers.
